[...] Adam Minter mentioned the other day that the New York Times published a story on the possibility that there is now a net outflow of cash from the PRC (it is not certain if this is true), and compares it to a Caijing story saying: To be fair, the Caijing article offers little more statistical evidence than the NYT piece, but - unlike the NYT piece - it doesn’t bury its uncertainty in unconnected anecdotes.
Western media are hampered by the rules that they set up for themselves when they come to China. How many good stories have been lost because they couldn't be fact checked?

You shut off comments to the Franken post so I'll comment here. Your article is a total cheap shot at Franken's lawyers. If I had a strong case I'd be reading my email too. Go back to writing about China you amateur.

I know what you mean about the quality of articles you get from foreign correspondents in China. I've been reading more of their China related stories lately and found many to be full of inaccuracies. Just the other day I read an article in Australia's main/best newspaper that had supposedly been written by their China correspondent in which Wen Jiabao was referred to as Mr. Jiabao throughout.

It's an interesting story to watch. Is China a Hotel California where your money can never leave? Negative FDI flows can be very disruptive for an economy, the story is important, even if the telling is a little complex and the situation perhaps opaque at this time.

As a former central banker and general stat person I must say I have a loving of facts. Because facts need to be explained, and explanations are where brownie points are to be won, [politically correct sexual partner] to swoon at and make for generally good conversation.

On media: China seems to have the whole media thing the wrong way round. A lot of good bloggers provide great and original content/analysis, local media report the news as they're allowed, international names seem to piece together stories from what occupied the minds such bloggers and local (translated) sources the week prior. But somewhere inside, I quite like the news being that way around.
