I just got back from TSN - My throat is sore and I was only there for a couple of days...The air was really bad and visibility was down to almost 5-10 meters only.

We live and study in Tianjin and have blogged on the air quality with a bunch of contrast photos (<a href="http://chinahopelive.net/2007/06/24/putting-the-omg-in-smog" rel="nofollow">here</a>). What can I say? It's like living in one of the scary future scenarios we read about in our middle school science textbooks.

being that I am jewish, my st christopher charm has never done me a damn bit of good. I have however gotten into a good excersize and limbering program so that I am now able to fully bend over...to kiss my ass goodbye on the roads of china.

I am a frequent traveller between Tianjin and Qinhuangdao ...I have seen some pretty amazing stuff bounce off the road in front of me from these night trucks ....I always find some sort of comfort stroking the travel insurance documents in my coat pocket, seems to work better than a St.Christopher charm ...so far

if the weather cooperates with hong kong, all will be well. this past summer in august and into september hong kong was clear as I have ever seen it. It was attributed to the prevailing winds blowing differently this past summer and keeping the smoke from Guangdong moving in the other direction.
that being said, it would be VERY difficult to go door to door in the Guandong province to all of the smelters that crank up at dark at spew out some nasty smells.

Micah - Thanks for the great link!

Randy - You make an interesting point. Much of China's fog/smoke during this time of year comes from agricultural burining. So, presumably, that's a problem that won't exist on 8/8/8. Likewise, coal and wood provide much - if not most - of China's home heating requirements. So those won't be a factor in 8/8/8, either. But, then again, I've been in Tianjin in the summer - and it can be rather foggy then, too. I think it's going to be very interesting to watch how Beijing controls, or attempts to control, the pollution floating into these other six Olympic host cities. Hong Kong might be the most daunting of the group - will Guangzhou's factories shut down to assure that Hong Kong's Olympic equestrian events are smog free? Is Beijing capable of forcing such a move? Hm.

you should see what the "fog" looks like around "west lake" the farmers are all burning off their fields and the highway is shut down all over the place. the smog never cleared all day.
